How many Fw 190s are still flying?

1
original listed airworthy

The volunteer survivor list marks 1 original Fw 190 as airworthy, in the United States. It lists 11 new-built Flug Werk reproductions as airworthy as well, and the FAA register holds 12.

When the Fw 190 first flew over France in August 1941, it proved superior in all but turn radius to the Spitfire Mk V, Wikipedia says. Focke-Wulf built more than 20,000.

The survivor list names 21 original airframes, and only one of them is marked airworthy. Most Fw 190s in the air today are reproductions built in Germany from 1996 on.

Register as of October 15, 2026. Survivor list as of July 6, 2026.

Originals and reproductions

The one original Fw 190 the list marks airworthy is at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in Everett, Washington. Of the other originals, 12 are on display and 6 are under restoration or in storage.

The list keeps a separate table of reproductions. Starting in 1996 the German company Flug Werk built a run of 21 new Fw 190s, labelled A-8/N, the N for Nachbau, or replica. Because BMW 801 engines are no longer available, they were fitted with a Shvetsov ASh-82FN radial. 11 are listed airworthy, 5 of them in the United States.

Two ways to count Fw 190s

The FAA register and the survivor list answer different questions, and each has blind spots.

CountFw 190sWhat it covers
FAA active registrations12United States only. Includes aircraft under restoration, in storage or on display.
Survivor list, listed airworthy1Volunteer-edited, not an official record. The list covers 8 countries.
Survivor list, US airworthy1The US share of the list's airworthy aircraft.
Survivor list, all statuses211 airworthy, 12 on display, 6 under restoration or in storage, 2 with no status given.

Who holds them

3 of the 12 registered Fw 190s belong to an individual. 1 is registered to limited liability companies and 8 to corporations.

Where they're registered

Registered addresses span 10 states. Oregon has 2, Virginia 2 and Florida 1. The register records the owner's registered address, which isn't necessarily where the aircraft is kept.

What powers them

Of the 6 registered Fw 190s with an engine on record, 2 list a BMW 801, the radial that powered most wartime versions, and 2 list a Pratt & Whitney R-2800.

Which airworthiness category they hold

6 of the 12 hold an Experimental certificate, a category the FAA issues for purposes that include exhibition under 14 CFR 21.191, and 6 have no category recorded in the register extract. The register counts airframes filed under Focke-Wulf or Arado. Replicas registered under a builder's own name aren't counted, and the register can't say whether an airframe filed as a Focke-Wulf is wartime-built or new.

The accident record: 2 events

The NTSB database holds 2 Fw 190 accident records from 2012 to 2022. None was fatal. 1 of today's 12 registrations appears on an accident record, and that one after the aircraft was substantially damaged or destroyed. With so few events, this is a count, not a trend.

The Warbirds in America hub breaks down all 36 types by purpose of flight, phase of flight and pilot experience.

One original in the air

Focke-Wulf built more than 20,000 Fw 190s, and the survivor list finds 21 originals today, in 8 countries. One is marked airworthy.

The FAA register holds 12 airframes filed as Fw 190s, and the reproductions table lists 5 airworthy Flug Werk builds in the United States.

Questions people ask

How many Fw 190s are still flying?

No official body publishes a count of airworthy Fw 190s. A volunteer-edited Wikipedia list (revision of July 6, 2026) shows 1 listed as airworthy worldwide, 1 of them in the United States. The FAA register shows 12 active US registrations, which includes aircraft under restoration, in storage or on display.

How many Fw 190s were built?

Wikipedia puts Fw 190 production at more than 20,000, from 1941 to 1945. Flug Werk later built a run of 21 new reproductions, starting in 1996.

Can a private individual own a Fw 190?

Yes. The register shows 3 registered to individuals, 1 to limited liability companies and 8 to corporations.

How many Fw 190s have been in accidents?

The NTSB database holds 2 Fw 190 accident records from 2012 to 2022. None was fatal. That's a count, not a rate, because the database has no flight hours.

Are the flying Fw 190s original?

Mostly not. The survivor list marks 1 original Fw 190 as airworthy and 11 new-built Flug Werk reproductions, which use a Shvetsov ASh-82FN radial because BMW 801 engines are no longer available.
